Jio impact - Aircel filed for bankruptcy

Aircel along its units filed for bankruptcy in the National companies law tribunal (NCLT) in Mumbai due to fierce competition (oligopoly) and high levels of debt(around 15000 crore).
This is the fourth telecom firm to wind up after billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led reliance Jio debuted in September 2016, unleashing a disruptive price war in the sector with its free voice calls and dirt-cheap data.
Aircel is an Indian mobile network operator, headquarter in gurgaon that offer voice and 2g and 3g data service. Maxis communication holds 74% stake in Aircel communication. Aircel was founded by Chinnakannan sivasankaran and commenced operation in Tamil Nadu in 1999it is sixth largest mobile service provider in India with subscriber base of 84.39 million subscriber as of December 2017.
Aircel is market leader in Tamil Nadu and has considerable presence in Odisha, Assam and north-east telecom circle.
Norway based Telenor and wireless business Tata teleservices is also transferring its assets to Airtel. Anil Ambani- run reliance communication which is is reeling under a debt of around Rs 42000 crore, is bowing out of the business with jio set to acquire its wireless infrastructure assets.

Downfall of Aircel-
1.       Intense completion following the disruptive entry of Jio.
2.       High level of unsustainable debt.
3.       Increased losses had together caused significant negative business reputational impact on the company
4.       GTL infrastructure had switch off nearly one-third of the total tower due to non payment of dues.
5.       Due to failure of merger with reliance communication due to Aircel-maxis scam.
Aircel-maxis scam-
The maxis group had invested in sun direct between 2007 -2009 and dayanidhi maran as the telecom minister misused office  in the deal. It was also alleged that maxis made quid pro investment in sun direct TV, OWNED BY dayanidhi maran, Kalanithi maran.
Despite this Aircel made yet another attempt to survive even in the face of an onslaught in the telecom sector from jio. The company decided to prune its operation and concentrate on only those circles where it is strong and which have scope for growth as a niche player. So on January 31, Aircel shut operation in sic circler and concentrated on the remaining sixteen.
The sector has been under pressure since 2009. High financial leverage caused by rising capex- the industry has cumulative debt of around rs4.6 trillion, while revenues are under Rs1.8 trillion and increasing thin margin jio pricing strategies mean there’s a long way to go.
If 2018 is indeed to be the year of growth, much depend on the new National Telecom policy, the relief package the government is putting together and the big three ability to find new revenue stream such as financial payment and streaming services.
